Understand your estimate

How the Brick Calculator Works

The calculator first finds the total wall area and subtracts doors, windows, and other openings. It then divides the net wall area by the face area covered by one brick plus its mortar joint.

The formula

Raw bricks =Net wall area(brick length + joint) × (brick height + joint)
  • Gross wall area = sum of wall length × wall height
  • Opening area = sum of width × height × quantity
  • Net wall area = gross area − opening area
  • Required bricks = raw bricks rounded up
  • Order quantity = raw bricks × (1 + waste %) rounded up
  • Estimated brick cost = order quantity × price per brick

All dimensions use the same units before calculation. Internal values are stored in meters; displayed values may be rounded.

Brick size & mortar joints

Coverage depends on the actual brick face and mortar joint thickness. A thicker joint increases the area covered by each module. Presets are starting points: brick dimensions vary by manufacturer and region, so confirm your selected product. Brick depth is not part of this calculation.

Choosing a waste allowance

A 5% allowance is included by default and can be changed from 0% to 100%. It approximates cutting and breakage; the amount you need depends on field conditions and layout. Waste is applied before rounding, so it is not calculated from the already rounded required quantity.

Methodology & assumptions

This ordinary wall-area estimate covers a single wall face with rectangular openings. Bond patterns can affect actual quantities; V1 does not apply a bond correction.

Complex arches, curved walls, special corner units, and multiple wythes are outside this version. Structural suitability, load-bearing design, mortar type recommendations, and code compliance are also outside its scope.

Frequently asked questions

Does this subtract doors and windows?

Yes. Add each rectangular opening with its width, height, and quantity. Their combined area is deducted from the gross wall area. Openings cannot exceed the wall area.

Why can the number of bricks per square foot change?

Coverage is calculated from your brick length, brick height, and mortar joint. It changes whenever those dimensions change.

Will changing units change my estimate?

No. Imperial and metric displays use the same underlying measurements. Switching units does not round or overwrite the physical values used in the calculation.

Does the cost include mortar or installation?

No. The optional cost is the order quantity multiplied by your price per brick, displayed in USD. It excludes mortar, labor, tax, and delivery.

Can I use this for a double-wythe or curved wall?

Multiple wythes and curved walls are outside V1. Confirm quantities for those projects with your supplier or contractor.
